The Times of India has posted an article about children’s literature which asserts that Batman and Robin might be gay. It also says that using the same logic, many people say that a host of other comics (including Superman and the Xmen) also promote gay themes.

Robin is a handsome boy, usually showing his uniform with bare legs. He often stands with legs spread, the genital region discreetly evident.

“Discreetly evident”? I guess there are heterosexual references in everything that shows a woman, being that their breasts are discreetly evident.

The article goes on to quote Suresh Manchanda who stats that Archie comics are a poor choice of entertainment for children.

Scroll down a bit once you get to the site, because the article starts out by talking about possible pornographic overtones to the latest Harry Potter novel (as I posted about earlier at Forevergeek.com.

This is one of the most ridiculous articles I’ve seen in a while. While the Time of India seem to be presenting the story in a non-opinionated way, the people quoted are obviously insane.

The references to Harry Potter are taken completely out of context. The references to Batman and Robin are mainly directed at the 1966 Batman television series, and also taken out of context (although rumor has it that the Batman show had many sexual innuendoes in it, so gay references in the show wouldn’t be that unlikely).

Another interesting point on this issue: many people from the gay community would argue that there is nothing wrong with homosexual references in these works, and the other side would argue back that there is. I have to agree that references to sex of any sort in children’s entertainment is harmful. But I’m sticking to my guns… too much has been read in to these comics and books.

Some people have way too much time on their hands, and psychologists and street bums are at the top of the list.
