A while back I decided that I wanted to incorporate news items in to my posts. While this wasn’t a bad idea in itself, it developed in to a lazy habit which I have currently decided to break.
When I first started trying to post the news I would scour the internet looking for the latest gossip on other people’s weblogs, or at google news. Then it hit me: press releases were what I needed. So I did some research and came up with a list of nearly every comic book company in existance. I emailed each and every one of them individually and asked for press release updates and “review material” (free comic books).

Freak Comics is now part of a gang. No, we don’t drive around shooting other gangs… yet. This is a gang / network (or “net-gang” if you will) of weblogs that feature excellent content and design. So why am I here? No one really knows. The net-gang leader who calls himself Scrivs most likely made a mistake and thought he was emailing Jeffrey Zeldman. At any rate, I will enjoy my temporary induction.
All jokes aside, I’m really happy to be in the 9rules Network. I figured that I would be laughed at, kicked in the pants and sent home crying while all of the cool people wrote posts about how stupid my site is. Guess I underestimated myself.

Previously I told you about a new title we (that is myself and an artist known simply as Darrel for the time being) have been working on entitled Chronicles of the Red Lion.
Well, this project has been nixed and replaced with The Chronicles of Anen. Similar title, different character.
Anen is a more exciting character and I’m sure you will all appreciate his story as it has lots of action, and some great twists.
Currently this title is in production. The script has been written, and we have several weeks worth of art penciled. I am inking and coloring the first few weeks, and then it’s on to the final stages of lettering.
The Chronicles of Anen will be published weekly, most likely each Monday.

As you have no doubt noticed, things have been quieter than usual around here. Think of it as the calm before a storm. Freak Comics has been developing itself, and it was starting to become a monster. Not a cool monster like Dracula or the Mummy, but more along the lines of a mindless clone bent on it’s own destruction. I couldn’t let this happen, so I’ve taken a step back and given this monster a long look and realized that some adjustments were in order.

I recently had a chance to check out the first two issues of the latest mini series from Image comics entitled Grounded, and I was pleasantly surprised.
The artwork in these books isn’t too shabby. I especially like it when Jonathan (the main character) is reading or remembering comic books. The halftone filter used is great. This series celebrates the joy of comic books, but takes a humorous approach to the whole thing. Jonathan is obsessed with comics. If his nose isn’t buried in a comic book, then he’s running around in a super hero costume. But Jonathan isn’t just a fan boy with an overactive imagination, he’s a fan boy that’s convinced comic books are real and that super heroes are cleverly hiding from the public. And he’s right. Jonathan soon finds himself attending a super hero high school where he’s the only kid without powers.
Grounded is about imagination and the love of comics. It’s about not fitting in, even when you’re in your element. It’s also about comic books and writer Mark Sable does an excellent job of showing us the real, secret life of super heroes.

Good news for anyone who enjoyed the first Adventures of Stickman series. I’ve decided to go ahead and publish a second installment.
This time Stickman’s adventures will be taking him to Egypt to investigate a strange string of deaths. The best news is, you don’t have to wait forever for myself to publish the series as I will be posting the first strip later today.
Stickman will now be a weekly series, with one strip released every Thursday. I’m sure this is a bit of a disappointment to many of you (going from a daily series to a weekly), however keep in mind that I do have a real job and it’s difficult to get these comics wrapped.

Ultimate X-men Annual #1 has sold out at Diamond. That’s three annual sellouts in a row.
We intend to more fully explore the bizarre Rogue/Juggernaut/Gambit triangle as established in the Ultimate X-Men Annual over in the monthly title. -Editor Ralph Macchio
