BERKELEY, CA — 20 December, 2005 — In the upcoming origins issue #4 of RUNES OF RAGNAN, the Viking god Odin will play a major role. The creative team of RUNES OF RAGNAN has worked to create a new vision of this legendary figure, and we are inviting ALL artists to do the same in our “Essence of Odin” art contest.

Artists from across the globe are invited to take on this iconic figure. Reinvent him, stretch the boundaries of what has been done, and create your own version of the AllFather. Odin is the central deity within Norse writings, and is considered by many to be the most powerful of gods within their mythology. Now is your chance to reinvent him.

The winner of this contest will win publication in the epic Origins issue of RUNES OF RAGNAN #4, signed copies of the book, and 2 limited edition signed lithographs!

If you are not familiar with RUNES OF RAGNAN, the entire #1 issue has recently been made available for FREE online at the Image Comics site http://www.imagecomics.com. This is a world rich with Viking Lore and the dark tones of a people that placed the warrior on such a high pedestal. You can also see a preview of issue #2 there as well!

Speaking of issue #4, German artist Philipp S. Neundorf will be taking on a 5 page sequence. Featuring Odin, this sequence was specifically written for Philipp, feeding into his strengths as a slightly abstract painter. We wanted the Viking realm of Valhalla and the presentation of Odin to be completely removed from the reality of the other pages in RoR.

Fans, make sure your local retailer has the hard-to-find first issue of Runes in stock by taking advantage of special deals at http:// www.joshmedors.com/ror/retailer/50centoffer.html

Son of M #1 cover

Pietro Maximoff, formerly the speedster known as Quicksilver, is at the lowest point of his life. And now he will be unable to pick up the first issue of his very own mini-series, Son of M #1, which has sold out of Diamond.

The creative team of David Hine and Roy Allan Martinex has received an enormous amount of acclaim for their emotionally-grabbing first issue. Ten Terrific writer Hine is sure to springboard into superstardom with the completion of Son of M and Martinez continues to impress with his intensely detailed visuals.

Eric Sunde of IGN.com asks, “Wow, another great Decimation tie-in miniseries? Peter David may have met his match in David Hine, as far as handling Quicksilver’s characterization goes.”

Don MacPherson of TheFourthRail.com says, “The [Decimation] limited series — such as Generation M and now the debut issue of this six-parter — are exploring some rich, character-driven material. This may be the best thing David Hine has written for Marvel Comics thus far, and given the promise he showed in early issues of District X, that’s saying something.”

TheComicFanatic.com says Roy Allan Martinez, “delivers a gorgeous issue filled with some of the most incredible detail ever put to a comic book panel.”

There are no plans at this time for a second printing of Son of M #1, so retailers are encouraged to increase their orders on any Decimation-related title. Many of the Decimation titles have already sold out and those that haven’t will not be available for reorder much longer.

Be sure to pick up Son of M #2 as Pietro is reunited with his wife, the Inhuman Crystal. Will Quicksilver find redemption among his remaining family or will the depths of his despair cause him to continue his downward spiral with yet another betrayal?

New Freak Comics layout leads to errors

I created a new layout to better highlight specific articles and features on this site, however there are a couple of small errors that have yet to be addressed.

For one, the archive links do not work, so you’re limited to the content displayed on the front page. This will be fixed within the next day or two.

Also, I’m not able to get RSS feeds set up for the News, Reviews and New Releases sections of the site. I’m working on this and should be able to get it rolling soon.

Those are the only issues I am aware of. If you know of anything else, please alert me.

Infinite Crisis #3 cover

Keeping up with Infinite Crisis is pretty hard without knowing what’s coming up next or has preceded the current issues. Of course, once you see this list you’ll realize that keeping up with Infinite Crisis even with the knowledge of what’s coming up next or has preceded is nearly impossible.

Thankfully you really don’t have to keep up with every title in order to stay in the know. If you really want to read Infinite Crisis I recommend the following:

Countdown to Infinite Crisis
Only one 80 page issue was made. This gets the ball rolling and explains a few events that lead up to the main story. Consider it a prologue (and at $2.50 for 80 pages a darn good buy), it’s not entirely necessary, but it’s worth the read and gives you a small amount of background information.
Rann-Thanagar War
This documents the war between the Ranns and the Thangarians and the involvement of the Green Lanterns.
Day of Vengeance
This title tells the story of the Specter, a super hero turned crazy villain bent on destroy all magic in the universe.
Villains United
Lex Luthor and almost every other super villain unite to work together as one unit, however a small number of villains that would rather not join form their own group to stop Lex.
Project Omac
Batman’s investigates attempts to uncover the plots of Checkmate, the now corrupt agency which has taken over his ultimate spy satellite, Brother Eye.
Infinite Crisis
This is the main title in this whole event. If you don’t read this, why bother with everything before it?

Rann-Thanagar War, Day of Vengeance, Villains United and Project Omac are each a six issue mini series and are available in trade paperback (Rann-Thanagar War will be available in trade at the end of this month).
Infinite Crisis is a seven issue mini-series and is currently up to Issue #2, with #3 being released this coming Wednesday.

As far as crossovers go, your best bet is reading those that occur in your favorite titles.

Angel

May 26, 2005 worldwide: the third coming of the X-Men. A new director and lots of new (or old depending on how you look at it) characters.

Although the release is quit a way off, you can still check out the very cool “announcement teaser”. There are also a number of photos of the cast online at the official movie site (designed in crap-o-vision Flash Animation) or you can check out the exact same photos (minus colossus for some reason) at the official marvel site in the media section (not really designed at all, but at least there’s no flash to bother with). Or you can check out high resolution versions at superherohype.com

The afore mentioned photos are rather lame since they are just profiles of the cast from the neck up. You can’t really check out their costumes. countingdown.com has what appears to be concept art and a few other images as well, and a metal Colossus can be found at canmag.com.

The Plot

According to imdb.com:When a cure is found to treat mutations, lines are drawn amongst the X-Men, led by Professor Charles Xavier (Stewart), and the Brotherhood, a band of powerful mutants organized under Xavier’s former ally, Magneto (McKellen).

The cast and crew

Director: Brett Ratner.
X-3 will be under the direction of a new mind, Brett Ratner. This guy’s resume includes such hits as Rush Hour, Prison Break… um… Rush Hour 2… and uh, Madonna: The Video Collection 93:99. Ouch. We could be in for a very bumpy ride.
Writers: Zak Penn and Simon Kinberg
Well, even if the director isn’t the greatest choice, the writers are good, right? right?? Uh no, wrong. ZAk Penn has given us Inspector Gadget, Behind Enemy Lines, Elektra and the Fantastic Four… oh, and X-Men 2: Mutants United. Kinberg has written such fine classic material as xXx: State of the Union. I realize that I should possibly cut Penn some slack since he did write X-2, but I wasn’t thrilled with the flick to begin with… although he wasn’t stupid enough to write the line “What happens to a toad when it’s struck by lightening? The same thing as everything else!” (so dramatic), so that gives me plus points automatically.
Ashley Hartman
IMDB lists Ashley Hartman as playing the part of Emma Frost. While introducing Emma Frost might seem like a bad idea since she didn’t come along until later, I have decided that continuity has gone out the window for all of the X-Men movies and you just have to take them for being alternate stories with bits of the comics mixed in. Not that cool, but whatever… it’s Hollywood. By the way, Hartman was (according to IMDB) contestant #32 on American Idol and had a role on the OC. She was also in Maxim and has a creepy doppleganger at Rutgers (a state university in New Jersey).

I’m not entirely sure what to think of this movie myself just yet. The trailer is awesome, and beast looks fairly cool. Angel looks amazing and I’m glad to see the Phoenix Saga will be explored… albeit loosely. After all they’re putting Moira MacTaggart in the show, but from what I can tell, no Banshee. Juggernaut will make his debut, but no Black Tom Cassady. I’m fairly certain that this photo from the trailer is of Cassady Keep, which would be in keeping with the original story line. If you’re going to do a Pheonix Saga story, why bother putting some of the starring cast from the comic in, but not all? And why bother mucking with the overall story? I really enjoyed the comic version and am afraid to see it translated on the big screen.
Of course, the cast of characters is dependent on IMDB being correct, which is up in the air as far as I’m concerned.

Something else that worries me: a massive amount of new mutants. IMDB has a list of the entire cast and crew and it seems like a bit of an overload on characters. I don’t want this to turn in to the original Batman movies, attempting to introduce as many characters as possible. Then again, X-Men has always relied on a large group of mutants, so we’ll just have to wait and see what the outcome will be.

It will also be very interesting to see how the write Nightcrawler off since Alan Cumming won’t return for another film.
